On January 26, 1950, India adopted a new constitution, officially becoming a republic, an event celebrated annually as Republic Day. Military and cultural parades are staples of the annual celebrations.

At New Delhi’s Kartavya path, members of the armed forces perform a grand military parade. Everything else happening in India on this joyous day pales in comparison to the spectacular show on Kartavya path.

A massive parade marks the beginning of the festivities in New Delhi, proceeding from Raisina Hill near the Rashtrapati Bhavan (President’s House), down the Kartavya path, past India Gate, and finally to the ancient Red Fort.

Republic Day’s Meaning:

The Indian National Congress published Purna Swaraj, the proclamation of India’s independence from colonial rule, on January 26, 1930, so that date was chosen as the official date of independence.

How Do They Commemorate This Event?

India as a whole celebrates Republic Day with much jubilation and happiness. It’s a holiday celebrating India’s independent Constitution. School and university campuses routinely display the national flag.

There are cultural celebrations all over India that support the freedom movement. The Indian President raises the national flag at New Delhi’s India Gate. In New Delhi, India, the grandest of parades takes place on Rajpath.

Background

On August 15, 1947, India declared its independence from the United Kingdom. The Constitution of India was only temporary at this point. On November 4, 1947, the drafting committee presented the first draught of the constitution to the national assembly.

On January 24, 1950, the national assembly approved the final English and Hindi versions of the constitution. On Republic Day, January 26, 1950, India’s constitution officially became law.

This date was selected because it marked the 88th anniversary of Purna Swaraj Day, which was originally celebrated on January 26, 1930. Through the constitutional process, Indians are now able to choose their own government and thus govern themselves.
