This past Wednesday, at the age of 84, Bill Plante, the legendary CBS News correspondent, passed away due to respiratory failure.
Plante, a Washington journalism institution, left CBS News in 2016 after a staggering 52 years on the job. On June 1, 1964, he began working as a reporter/assignment editor for CBS News in New York.
He would spend the next fifty years at the network, covering stories from Vietnam (in 1964, 1967, 1971–1972, and 1975), Iceland, Moscow, and Teheran. From 1988 to 1995, he was the face of CBS’s Sunday night news, and he covered the White House for CBS News for four presidents.

Plante’s previous position at CBS News was as Senior White House Correspondent, where she contributed to both the CBS Morning and CBS Evening News. As a CBS national correspondent, he covered the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches.
He covered the Vietnam War for four separate tours, beginning in 1964 and ending in 1975 with the fall of Saigon. From 1988 to 1995, he was the voice of CBS’s Sunday Night News. He stepped down in November of 2016.
Personal Life
Barbara Barnes Orteig was the first woman to whom Plante was married. In addition to adopting her four sons from a previous marriage, they had two children together, one of whom is the nationally syndicated radio host Chris Plante.
They separated, and he wed Robin Smith in 1987. Their 34-year marriage ended with his passing. Patrick, one of his sons, died in 2014. Plante passed away on September 28, 2022, at his Washington, D.C. home. He was in his eighties when he passed away from respiratory failure.
