The San Antonio Spurs playmaker Kawhi Leonard has reportedly reached out Cleveland Cavaliers’ superstar LeBron James amid negotiations of a move to the Los Angeles Lakers.
According to a league source close to the matter, Leonard expressed his deep cravings to play alongside the veteran superstar in 2018-19 NBA season. The 2014 Finals MVP pitched his defensive ability to the James and stressed out how he would help reduce the pressure off him.
It’s quite a good pitch considering LeBron significantly carried the Cavaliers to the 2018 NBA Finals in the playoffs, but without any legitimate help from his colleagues, he was unable to make the postseason a competitive campaign as the Golden State Warriors swept the Cavs in just four games.
Leonard made an understandable intentions of desiring to be traded from the Spurs earlier this month, with the L.A. Lakers being his most preferred franchise. While an early approach from the Purple and Gold was declined, the San Antonio are now in discussions with the Lakers as well as the Celtics and among other ball clubs as it appears they have given up on attempting to restore their professional relationship with Leonard and convincing him to re-sign a new long-term contract deal.
Where Leonard ends up could have massive innuendos on the future of the league. The Los Angeles want to forge a deal with him and the antes are largely high with current conversations as LeBron makes his free agency decision on Friday. James does not appears like he will exercise his player option to re-sign with the Cavaliers, making him the most desired unrestricted free agent player in the market with the Lakers being the top favorites to acquire him.
A contract for Kawhi would nearly guarantee an obligation from LeBron to sign with the Lakers as the the team intend on re-building a new powerhouse team with the two as well as the soon-to-be unrestricted free agent Paul George.
But with the probability of Paul George sticking with the OKC Thunder, it is most important that the Lakers acquire Leonard first as James will not take the bait without another superstar in the team. It is make sense of that James also wants to make his final decision on his next franchise next month.
However, landing a superstar won’t be that simple, as the Los Angeles still need to present a package to the San Antonio that they can’t totally resist. With Leonard having single season remaining in his contract, the Spurs will demand a pretty big package to part ways with their star player.
