NFL Rumors: Patriots, Gronkowski Contract Extension Still In Limbo

NFL Trade Rumors Alert: Rob Gronkowski’s contract extension with the New England Patriots still hanging over the horizon.

Superstar tight end Rob Gronkowski‘s future with the New England Patriots continue to exist as a top story of the National Football League (NFL) offseason, though one of the left-brained outcomes — a new contract deal for the two-time Super Bowl champion tight end — may not come over the table anytime soon.

Mike Florio of the Pro Football Talk reported: “Per a source with knowledge of the situation, a new contract for Gronkowski is ‘likely,’ but ‘nothing is imminent.’ The source added that there’s still plenty of work to do.”

The 29-year-old tight end didn’t attend the organizations’s voluntary organized team activities (OTAs), although he did report to the franchise for last week’s mandatory minicamp. Gronk also told the media that he considered retirement but opted to play at least another season.

“I feel like I’m just going to do what’s best for myself and take care of myself because if I can’t take care of myself, I can’t take care of anyone else and I can’t help out the team,” Gronkowski said.

Gronkowski added that he feel like he definitely made the right decision coming back to the league.

As for the NFL trade rumors this year that emerged last week, Gronkowski and the Patriots have repeatedly and articulately denied them.

“It just shows how much fakes news is out there. Hashtag fake news, that’s all I know,” Gronkowski said. “It’s true. It exists. See it all the time about me. It’s wild.”

“I would say with the utmost confidence that none of that is true,” New England Patriots spokesperson Stacey James said in a press statement. “None of it.”

Whether Rob Gronkowski secures a brand new contract deal with the Patriots remains to be determined. Gronk’s is slated to pocket a whopping $8 million in 2018 and $9 million in 2019, per As for Gronkowski’s injury history, it may leave New England unwilling to offer him a long-term contract deal.

On the other side of the ball, Gronkowski’s production in the NFL when healthy — 76 touchdowns in 102 professional football career games — is prime. Gronk’s one of the most dynamic playmakers in the league and a nightmare to the opponents. Surely, Rob remains quarterback Tom Brady’s leading option in the passing game. — The Velvetiere
