The Carolina Panthers visits the Tennessee Titans for an intense football action game in the second week of the 2017 NFL preseason on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at the Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee.
Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota returned to the gridiron last week in the team’s preseason opener. Now the three-years quarterback wants to do more when the Titans play host the Carolina Panthers in their second preseason matchup on Saturday afternoon.
Mariota recorded a 2-of-3 passes for 15 yards, where he ran for six yards and was sacked while playing a couple of series in the franchise’s first exhibition game of the season, a 7-3 defeat to the New York Jets on August 12. The former Oregon star played for the first time since injuring his right fibula back in December 2016. The 22-year-old Mariota, who was selected by the Titans with the second overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, is looking to grow more chemistry with the team’s wide receivers, but he won’t have Eric Decker on the football field.
Carolina quarterback Cam Newton thrown passes during practices as he rehabs his surgically repaired shoulder, but he’s not expected to play Saturday. Backup quarterback and former Oregon State star Derek Anderson is expected to start at quarterback for the Panthers.
Whether the Panthers star quarterback Cam Newton plays on Saturday afternoon in the team’s exhibition game against the Titans will be determined on Friday after the quarterback meets with the coaching staffs and medical personnel about his shoulder. That appears unlikely considering that the three-time Pro Bowler did participated in a Carolina’s drill during the two joint practice sessions, and the first time the 28-year-old star quarterback threw passes defended by Tennessee Titans was on Thursday.
The Tennessee bounced back from their first practice session with Carolina. The Titans’ first-team defense forced the Panthers into a couple of throwaways before Derek Anderson was partial on a third pass. Pro Bowler linebacker Brian Orakpo recorded a sack, and rookie linebacker Jayon Brown forced Chris Manhertz to fumble.
