Mariveles, Philippines — In commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Bataan Death March and the Philippine Veterans Week, a marathon and trail events will be held for two weekends which begins tomorrow.
Kicking off the festivities will be the Bataan Freedom Run on Sunday, April 2nd, in the Freeport Area of Mariveles in Bataan.
Then the all-new Mariveles-San Fernando-Capas Freedom Trail will be held on April 10-11, a fun run event that will bring participants to the historic Bataan Death March route.
Mariveles Mayor AJ Concepcion assured the municipality’s outpouring support for this year’s Bataan Freedom Run and Freedom Trail, saying that the events will highlight the historical role of Mariveles during World War 2.
“Aside from rekindling heroism, Bataan Freedom Run and Freedom bring to the consciousness the historicalness of Mariveles,” the Mariveles Mayor AJ Concepcion said. “We will provide all the logistical support for the success of these events.”
Mariveles is the starting point of both events. The municipal town of Mariveles was also one of the two starting points of the infamous Death March. The Bataan Freedom Run in Mariveles is on April 2 with five categories: 42 km, 21 km, 10 km, 5 km, and 1 km.
For his part, Bataan Governor Abet Garcia said: “These events can be a springboard to rediscover the role of Bataan during World War, especially for the younger generation.”
